[playlist] Hump Day Power Play (4-25-2012)

Ratatat Edition

I've been on a big Ratatat kick lately, and I decided to put all may favorite, energy-driven songs together into this week's Hump Day Power Play. It's amazing to me how distinct Ratatat's sound is compared to their contemporaries. Truly one of those bands that invented a new sound and created a new genre of music, in my opinion.

Surprisingly, after compiling the playlist, it appears I don't get pumped up by listening to their self-titled debut as much as their other 3 LPs... interesting. Nevertheless, if you're feeling power-sapped this morning, hopefully this mix can kick you over the hump. Enjoy.

 Afternoon Dream Edition

I can't get enough of Kishi Bashi's newest LP 151a, and since you can't access that album on Spotify currently, I've put together a playlist that pulls from the same sounds of airy/folksy dream pop. As the weather warms and the days grow longer, this week's Hump Day Power Play is perfect for lounging next to the open breezy window. So go ahead and grab your favorite book, hit play on this HDPP, and as always, enjoy.

[new music] Kishi Bashi - 151a

On Repeat

This album has been out for a while, but I'm just getting around to listening to it. K Ishibashi (aka Kishi Bashi), whose violin skills have helped bring of Monteal's and Regina Spektor's music come alive on stage, has finally released his solo debut 151a and it's pretty awesome. The 9-song LP is an interesting mix of orchestral arrangements and synthesized pop songs. The results are very pleasant, and definitely worth checking out. Steam the album below, and purchase here.

In an attempt to create a playlist that channeled this dreamy/beachy vibe found on these two amazing releases, I ended up with this week's Hump Day Power Play. It's one of my favorite mixes to date. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

[new music] Vacationer - Gone LP

Debut Album from Vacationer!

I’ve been slow to get this out there, but you MUST check out Vacationer’s newest LP Gone. Not to be confused with the "Gone" Single, or the Gone EP, the band’s debut album follows the same formula of island-themed dreamscaping. Listening to Gone feels like a magical ride to some place tropical and surreal. Book your trip Buy the album here, stream the album here (via Spotify), or check out one of the new tracks below. In case you haven’t heard the song that inspired it all, watch the video for "Gone" below as well.

White Rabbits Edition

Lately, I've found myself listening to White Rabbits' newest LP Milk Famous on repeat, and it got me thinking I should spotlight them in this week's Hump Day Power Play, highlighting their very solid 3-album catalog. If you haven't given Milk Famous a listen, the White Rabbits have taken an even further departure from their debut Fort Nightly. And while some may quickly right off the new sound as Spoon-esque, I tend to disagree. Yes, I get that their second album It's Frightening was produced by Spoon's very own Britt Daniel, and that their newest album was produced by long-time Spoon producer Mike McCarthy, I just don't hear the "stark similarities" that have been negatively written about in reviews. While they've taken the more minimalist route in their sound lately, they've also crafted it in a very familiar White Rabbits way. The results are slow to grow on you, but definitely worth the investment of multiple listens. Try it yourself, and check out this week's playlist below.
