[playlist] Hump Day Power Play (3-21-2012)

Whistling Mix

This has been one crazy week. In a blink of an eye, it's already Wednesday again, and I somehow managed to nearly forget the release of the Hump Day Power Play! The theme this week was supposed to be "Whistle While You Work". I usually hate when people whistle out loud, but if it's used as an instrument in a song, I find it quite catchy. So feast your ears on this week's playlist, and I'll wager you're whistling to these songs before you even realize it.

Hear it by simply clicking here. Playlist is below.

Peter Bjorn and John - Black Cab Session

Peter Bjorn and John

Head over to the Black Cab Sessions and listen to one of their newest additions, Peter Bjorn and John (sans Bjorn) performing their title track off their latest album Living Things. This little acoustic number is a sweeter, lighter version of the electronically driven track that appears on the LP.

From Black Cab Sessions:
We encountered Peter and John, laden with suitcases, on Curtain Road in Hoxton, and, as we wondered where Bjorn was, they quickly squeezed themselves into our cab. We were immediately given a quirky rendition of Living Thing, the title track from their new album. John then explained that Bjorn was in his suitcase, we laughed nervously...

Peter Bjorn and John: Living Thing Streamed

Peter Bjorn and John showcase new album via MySpace

After a huge departure from Writer's Block with 2008's instrumental Seaside Rock, PBJ return to the mic with Living Thing. If you'd like to listen to it for yourself, the band is streaming the entire album over at their MySpace page. While you won't hear any addictive songs like the heroin-strength "Young Folks", the album still seems to be pretty catchy after my first listen. It's definitely heavier on the electronic effects, but I think the change in sound shows that the band is still trailblazing new musical terrain. However, it does beg the question, why are people panning this record? I don't want to hear "Young Folks Pt. 2" - did people really expect to hear another Writer's Block?

Living Thing will be released March 31 (pre-order here).
