New Music by Wolfmother - "Back Round"

New song after a year of silence

Wolfmother proved that they can still make sick psychedelic rock with only 1/3 of its original members. In 2008, both Chris Ross and Myles Heskett left the band due to "irreconcilable personal and musical differences", leaving frontman Andrew Stockdale the decision to can the band, or keep it going with some new members. Ultimatley, Stockdale chose the latter, and with the addition of guitarist Aidan Nemeth, bassist and keyboardist Ian Peres, and drummer Dave Atkins, the newly-formed quartet began toying with their sound and even played a few under-the-radar shows.

In the latest bit of news, Wolfmother (ver 2.0) is now offering up a free download of their next single "Back Round". Head over to the band's official site and enter your "real" email address and phone number, and you'll be given a link to download this sweet new track. You're also asked to make a donation to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009.

We Were Promised Jetpacks - "Quiet Little Voices" Single

We Were Promised a Single

For nearly two years, We Were Promised Jetpacks went unsigned, but due to their band's rousing stage performance, they created a mountain of buzz that they rightfully deserved. After the Scottish quartet signed to FatCat Records (alongside fellow countrymen Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit), the band hit the studio to polish up many of their concert staples, as well as penning a slew of new jams. On May 4, 2009, the band will release the first single, "Quiet Little Voices", off their debut LP These Four Walls (which is set to drop in June). Speaking of the album, the band recently was interviewed by Ragged Words and had this to say about These Four Walls:
[The album will have] 10 full songs and a wee instrumental number that we decided was nice and was worth putting on. I think it might be a little less-dancey-hi-hats-and-spikey guitars than people would expect. We tried really hard to make a record that has some variation and depth. I really hope we can proud of it in 50 years time. In the interests of not wanting to disappoint I'll also say you can expect it to be really rubbish.
If you head over to the band's MySpace page, you can stream two songs on the single. The first thing you'll notice is that they've given "Quiet Little Voices" a new coat of paint. It's really nice to hear a higher quality recording of this song, especially when the sweet base lines kick in. The b-side, "Let's Call This A Map", is the same recording from the band's 2007 self-titled EP. Both of these songs are wonderful, and make me very excited about June. To hear the original "Quiet Little Voices", also from the band's EP, follow the link below. It's because of this song (and KEXP's Song of the Day) that I've had the pleasure of experiencing this band. Now if only they could mount a tour through Seattle...

Speaking of tours, if you live in the UK, the band is playing a few festivals this year.
28 Jun - Outsider Festival, Rothiemurchus, UK
24 Jul - Wickerman Festival, Dundrennan, UK

Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer

Forth studio album by Sunset Rubdown

Just posted today at Jagjaguwar Records, Sunset Rubdown's next album will be entitled Dragonslayer. Album art is posted above, and the expected release date will be June 23, 2009. Also released was the track listing. I'm really excited to finally see a studio cut of "Idiot Heart", which can be heard here at the band's second Daytrotter Session (and also at the end of this post). 2009 is going to be sweet!

Track listing:
  1. Silver Moons
  2. idiot Heart
  3. Apollo and the Buffalo and Anna Anna Anna Oh!
  4. Black Swan
  5. Paper Lace
  6. You Go on Ahead (Trumpet Trumpet II)
  7. Nightingale / December Song
  8. Dragon's Lair
The official press-release for the album reads below:
Sunset Rubdown was once the moniker under which Spencer Krug released low fidelity solo recordings. The project has long since evolved into a full band, and Dragonslayer is the third full-length recorded by the whole group. Besides Krug, it features the three musicians who originally signed on: Jordan Robson-Cramer on drums, guitar and keys, Michael Doerksen on guitar and bass, and Camilla Wynne Ingr on keys, percussion and vocals. And now, for the first time, newest member Mark Nicol can be heard on bass, drums, and percussion.

Sunset Rubdown's previous release on Jagjaguwar, Random Spirit Lover, was a studio-built album, in that much of it was written while recording (built up in separate layers, with almost all the vocals needing to be overdubbed). With the new album, the band wanted to try something completely different. It was a very conscious decision, and not a "natural progression." The result is an album that feels honest, natural, and straightforward. The musicianship is left in the open, unassisted by studio magic, and the songs are left to justify for themselves their own screwy pop-rock existence.

Dragonslayer was recorded in the fall of 2008. Sunset Rubdown hope that the true strength of this new album is a hidden complexity that emerges slowly from within the straight production and raw musicianship, and from what sounds at first to be an only slightly skewed approach to pop. They hope it's like that one friend of yours who looks unassuming and normal, but once you get to know him it's obvious he's basically crazy.

The Cave Singers: New Song "Beach House"

The Cave Singers: "Beach House"

A new song entitled "Beach House" was posted today at The Cave Singers' MySpace page. The band has been playing this song at their shows for over a year now, and it really sounds good on the studio cut.

"Beach House", along with "Television Towns" are two songs that have been shared via MySpace. It is quite likely that both of these tracks will end up on the much anticipated follow-up to Invitation Songs, hopefully hitting shelves before the summer.

The Cave Singers will be playing shows across the county starting in April. Don't miss them with Dr. Dog when they play the newly renovated/resurrected Crocodile Cafe on April 14. For more shows, read on:
