While it technically isn't endorsed by Montreal's finest, I'm sure Wolf Parade would appreciate fans who don this at their shows. Speaking of Wolf Parade, when are we ever going to get a studio recording of "Things I Don't Know" (aka "String Me Along")? This is quite possibly my favorite Spencer-sung WP song to date, yet no love on finding a home At Mount Zoomer... Perhaps we'll get to hear it on Wolf Parade LP #3. This is just a friendly reminder that Black Joe Lewis & gang will be playing the Tractor Tavern on May 22, 2009. For those of you who saw Spoon rock the Showbox in 2007, Black Joe Lewis was the wickedly groovin' opener, complete with lots of brass and big band power, who also provided the horns for Spoon's performances of "Underdog," "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb," and "Jonathon Fisk." While I'll admit that their sound that night was a little off - they could have been a casualty of the sound dude - their new EP (produced by Spoon drummer Jim Eno) is a testiment that these guys have loads of potential. Released back in March, the band's debut EP Tell 'Em What Your Name Is! has plenty of reasons why you should head over to the Tractor later this month and check out their live show in a more intimate setting.
Unfortunately for Black Joe Lewis, they happen to be playing the same night as the Melvins and Green River at the Showbox. Pick your pleasure wisely, I guess.
Sun Giant's standout single "Mykonos" hits shelves today
Fleet Foxes released the single "Mykonos" b/w "False Knight on the Road" on Sub Pop Records today. For those of you who own the Sun Giant EP, "Mykonos" was probably the song that made you a FF fan in the first place. This majestic fairy-tale number is accompanied by the traditional folk song "False Knight" (which can be heard here), making this single a must-have for any fan. A strange, yet artfully funny teaser from Dragonslayer
Sunset Rubdown released this little snippet of "Paper Lace" (with the opening bit of Family Ties), a song from their upcoming album Dragonslayer. For those of you who've heard Swan Lake's version of this song from Enemy Mine, you'll probably notice how distinct the two renditions sound. I guess we'll have to wait until June 23 to hear "Paper Lace" in its entirety.
In other Sunset Rubdown news, for those of you who purchased the David Horvitz picture disc of Sunset Rubdown Introducing Moonface, these will apparently ship on this Friday (May 8). If you didn't purchase a copy of the limited release, the band announced that they'll be selling copies at shows while supplies last. For a listing of their upcoming shows, continue reading. As stated before, Scottish quartet We Were Promised Jetpacks will release their debut single "Quiet Little Voices" tomorrow on FatCat Records. According to the band's press release through their fans' mailing list, "it's the first time that people can buy our music and our mums and dads are very excited." The single is set to be released on 7" and download, and the best place to buy it is probably the FatCat website. It will also be available in some shops in the UK (well, shops that sell 7" singles).
According to this VancouverIAM interview, Montreal indie rockers Plants and Animals have finished up their 3 weeks of studio time at the Treatment Room and are happy with the results. As stated at the band's official site, the "shit's sounding goooood." Following up their last album Parc Avenue with the same game-winning formula, Plants and Animals will again be self-producing LP #2. I'm sure it'll be as wonderful as its predecessor, especially after hearing some of the new tunes live last March when they played the Nectar Lounge. Still no word on when we should expect to hear any of these songs, but probably some time this year!
With the number of tour dates currently on the lighter side, the band apparently will be taking it easy this summer. The band's only State-side date will be Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival in July.
