[review] We Were Promised Jetpacks @ Neumos (9-16-2009)

We were promised nothing, but got nearly everything

Last night, playing to a sold out crowd of eager Seattleites, Scottish quartet We Were Promised Jetpacks took the stage at Neumos. On the ticket stub, it read the show was for Frightened Rabbit: fellow Scottish indie rockers. For me, however, the real headliners of the night were the four Glaswegian transplants from Edinburgh who provided the first of three sets. And while these Scotsmen are - as they put it so nicely - younger than the Ghostbusters, you never would have guessed it when the band kicked off their set with "It's Thunder And It's Lightning", the first track off WWPJ's solid debut These Four Walls. To have only been touring for little over a year, you might have expected higher levels of timidity. This was not the case.

It really helped that the crowd was so into the band - you could tell that the whole group was feeding off the energy in the room. Much thanks needs to be given to local radio station KEXP, for they are greatly responsible for the exposure of WWPJ to the Pacific Northwest. Back before the band had even signed to FatCat Records, when there was only the 3-song self-titled EP available, KEXP first aired "Quiet Little Voices" as the "song of the day". In fact, that's how I learned of these guys over a year ago.

And you could tell that the crowd was familiar with "Quiet Little Voices" based on the amount of cheers given to lead singer Adam Thompson when he announced that "the next song is really good" and that "if you don't like it, you should probably take a step outside" (said in a thick Scottish brogue). As soon as the opening riff was played, a sea of movement took over Neumos' main floor. After the killer a rendition of "Voices", an emotionally charged "Ships With Holes Will Sink" immediately followed, which in my opinion was the best song of the night. Other highlights included "Keeping Warm" which showcased the charging album-version introduction, as well as the cathartic performance of the night closer "Short Bursts."

I can't really do the band justice by describing how great WWPJ sound live. These guys are performers, and they have a live show which cannot be captured on recordings. While These Four Walls is a great album, the live version is miles beyond. It's only a matter a time before these guys break though into US popularity. Until then, keep your eyes peeled for a show near you. Tour dates and a setlist of the night (which I think is correct) are posted at the bottom.

Setlist (9-16-2009):

We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls Out Today

These Four Walls Out Today!

WWPJ fulfill their promise to deliver a full-length album, releasing These Four Falls on FatCat Records today. Next week, the band will also release their second single "Roll Up Your Sleeves" (album cover below) on June 22. The single will contain the b side "Back To The Bare Bones," which will not be featured in their debut album. Sadly, we Staters have to wait until July 7 for the official US release. Though, as stated earlier, Seattle will soon be graced by the presence of three wonderful Scottish bands (Frightened Rabbit, Twilight Sad, and most importantly We Were Promised Jetpacks). Prime yourself for this show by either buying the album or streaming it here. This album kicks so much ass.

We Were Promised Jetpacks - Single Out Tomorrow

WWPJ - "Quiet Little Voices" Single Out Tomorrow

As stated before, Scottish quartet We Were Promised Jetpacks will release their debut single "Quiet Little Voices" tomorrow on FatCat Records. According to the band's press release through their fans' mailing list, "it's the first time that people can buy our music and our mums and dads are very excited." The single is set to be released on 7" and download, and the best place to buy it is probably the FatCat website. It will also be available in some shops in the UK (well, shops that sell 7" singles).

To purchase a copy for yourself, go here.

To hear the new recording of "Quiet Little Voices," check out this video below.

We Were Promised Jetpacks - "Quiet Little Voices" Single

We Were Promised a Single

For nearly two years, We Were Promised Jetpacks went unsigned, but due to their band's rousing stage performance, they created a mountain of buzz that they rightfully deserved. After the Scottish quartet signed to FatCat Records (alongside fellow countrymen Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit), the band hit the studio to polish up many of their concert staples, as well as penning a slew of new jams. On May 4, 2009, the band will release the first single, "Quiet Little Voices", off their debut LP These Four Walls (which is set to drop in June). Speaking of the album, the band recently was interviewed by Ragged Words and had this to say about These Four Walls:
[The album will have] 10 full songs and a wee instrumental number that we decided was nice and was worth putting on. I think it might be a little less-dancey-hi-hats-and-spikey guitars than people would expect. We tried really hard to make a record that has some variation and depth. I really hope we can proud of it in 50 years time. In the interests of not wanting to disappoint I'll also say you can expect it to be really rubbish.
If you head over to the band's MySpace page, you can stream two songs on the single. The first thing you'll notice is that they've given "Quiet Little Voices" a new coat of paint. It's really nice to hear a higher quality recording of this song, especially when the sweet base lines kick in. The b-side, "Let's Call This A Map", is the same recording from the band's 2007 self-titled EP. Both of these songs are wonderful, and make me very excited about June. To hear the original "Quiet Little Voices", also from the band's EP, follow the link below. It's because of this song (and KEXP's Song of the Day) that I've had the pleasure of experiencing this band. Now if only they could mount a tour through Seattle...

Speaking of tours, if you live in the UK, the band is playing a few festivals this year.

24 Jul - Wickerman Festival, Dundrennan, UK

New We Were Pomised Jetpacks Song

Head over to We Were Promised Jetpacks' MySpace page and stream their newest song, "Keeping Warm". The acoustic track is one of many new songs that will most likely end up on the boys' debut LP, which is tentatively due out in May 2009 through Fat Cat Records. Also making the track listing for the band's upcoming album is "Conductor" (see video below), performed for Bandstand Busking. I just love the venue for this live rendition. The month of May can't come soon enough!

We Were Promised Jetpacks Sign with FatCat Records

We Were Promised a Debut Album

Huge news for the Scotland quartet, We Were Promised Jetpacks - the band has just this month signed on with FatCat Records, home to No Age, Sigur Rós, and touring mates Frightened Rabbit. The band has garnered a lot of attention after releasing their 3-song EP, which is available on a previous post, as well as though extensive touring along side Frightened Rabbit. Their biggest break seems to have come from KEXP's Song of the Day for "Quiet Little Voices" (which is where I first heard the band). According to FatCat, we should all expect a WWPJ album to debut around May 2009 - exciting stuff. Some songs that will inevitably end up on the record are posted below:

We Were Promised Jetpacks - Bandstand Busking

Scotland's We Were Promised Jetpacks
Perform In Amusement Park

The latest gimmicky website posting sweet 3-4 song sets of our favorite up-and-coming artists is Bandstand Busking. It's actually a fairly cool idea. Unlike Black Cab Sessions, where we can't actually ride along with the performers, Bandstand Busking offers all Londoners the invitation to attend these performances live. As the site promises if one joins their mailing list:

Fancy coming along? Subscribe and we'll let you know when and where our next Bandstand Busking will be happening...come down, bring a beer, and enjoy the music.

So far, there have only been two Bandstand acts, but the site plans that every week or so, a musical act will perform in a park in and around London. Visit the site to view three songs performed by WWPJ: "Ships With Holes Will Sink" (see above), "An Almighty Thud", and "Conductor".

For other WWPJ songs, you'll have to find a copy of their sole release - in 2007, these Glaswegians sold copies of a 3-song self-titled, self-released EP. You can hear these tracks on their MySpace page, but actually getting a hold of them is a trickier issue. Hopefully, these dudes sign a record deal and then it won't be an issue. Until then, see below:

We Were Promised Jetpacks

Scotland's Glaswegian Quartet Showcases New Fresh Tunes:

Not since Beta Band's Heroes to Zeroes have I been so excited for a new album to drop out of Scotland - We Were Promised Jetpacks have shown great potential for what's to come... Just check out their MySpace page for some sample tracks. The unsigned four-piece rockers (who are just barely old enough to drink in the US) have created quite the buzz about themselves in the UK, finding air-time on BBC1, and very recently reaching their way across the sea - KEXP here in Seattle has been playing "Quiet Little Voices" quite a lot these days. For a listen, check out these two songs from their self-released, self-titled 2007 EP - reminds me at times of a string-free Ra Ra Riot.
