Review: Black Joe Lewis @ The Tractor Tavern (5-22-2009)

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears brought the brass and blues to the Tractor Friday night. Opening for alt-country rockers Lucero (basically a country version of Nickelback), BJL definitely out-shined the headliners. I was surprised when I arrived at the Tractor that the bands would be playing to a sold-out crowd, and I was also thankful that I had decided to purchase tickets in advance.

Before BJL took the stage, I was very curious how they were going to fit eight band members onto the Tractor's tiny stage. Last time I saw their live act was at the Showbox in '07, and even then they had a hard time eluding each other while the blues took hold of their movements. However, at 9:30pm, the band took the stage and seemed very comfortable in their tight arrangement (I feel like they're used to playing small stages). We were quickly greeted by Black Joe Lewis, at which point he informed us that they were going to play some music for us in an attempt to convince us to buy some of their music. Judging from their set, I think they definitely boosted album sales. Playing mainly off their latest LP Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!, the band kicked off the night with an explosive rendition of "Gunpowder." They immediately followed with "Big Booty Woman," which sent shivers down my spine. This was by far the best song of the night, especially with the baritone sax kicking into full gear. The greatest thing about seeing BJL live (well, any band with a brass/sax section for that matter) is actually feeling the music. Simply playing a record cannot replicate that experience. Feeling the baritone sax's sound waves brings on a whole different experience. Other highlights from the night included "Sugarfoot," "I'm Broke," and some really funny improvisation during "Get Yo Shit." After experiencing such a wonderful set, I'm now confident that these guys must have had an off-night last time they played Seattle. These dudes really rocked the Tractor, and gave us a way better show compared to their headlining counterparts. As for Lucero, I was very unimpressed and bored during their whole set. Apparently I was the minority that night since everyone around me knew the words to every song. If you get a chance to catch Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, you'd be a fool to pass it up.

New Music - White Antelope (Robin Pecknold's Solo Work)

Robin Pecknold's ever-changing solo project White Antelope (aka Monte Cristo, aka Carthage) has just added two more songs to its MySpace page. "Silver Dagger" and "Wild Mountain Thyme" join the already posted "False Knight on the Road" and "Guitar Duet." Head over and give them a listen. Also, speaking of Fleet Foxes, there was a great interview by The Stranger (read here) with Pecknold summing up the last crazy year, while touching on the progress of the new album.

Fleet Foxes will be playing Sasquatch this Monday.

White Rabbits - New Video / Album Stream / Coming to Seattle

"Percussion Gun" Music Video from White Rabbits

The White Rabbits' newest album, It's Frightening, just hit shelves Tuesday. To sample it, the band is streaming the entire album over at their website (here). Also, a video for the first single off their second long player can be viewed above. The song, "Percussion Gun," is a powerfully drum-driven jammer that sets the tempo for the rest of the record. For those expecting to hear Fort Nightly Pt. II, you may be slightly disappointed. The band is clearly traveling in a new direction, and with Britt Daniel as their guide, the destination is anything but frightening for fans. The White Rabbits should take solace in the fact that they've successfully overcome the sophomore slump, producing a second album that exemplifies maturity and creativity, and shows promise in the potential for band survival. I hate to subject this new album to the comparison to Spoon, but it's hard not to. Frightening is extremely stripped down compared to the bloated, fully orchestrated hits off of Fort Nightly. Many songs on Frightening are minimalist approaches with simple drums-piano-vocal elements - very Spoon-like - however, that's where the comparison ends. I think the White Rabbits have struck gold on this album, and I look forward to their live show this June at the Crocodile. The arsenal of hits they've amassed on these two albums is enough to entertain all night long. The White Rabbits will commence their North American tour at the end of this month, starting in Cleveland. Check them out in a city near you.

After a few listens, I'd have to say that I'm most happy with the tracks "Idiot Heart," "Apollo And The Buffalo And Anna Anna Anna Oh!" (slower than the live versions I'd heard), and "Nightingale / December Song" (this song is sweeet).

New Music: We Were Promised Jetpacks

We Were Promised a Debut Album and Second Single

According to FatCat Records, WWPJ will be releasing their debut album, These Four Falls (album cover above) on June 15, 2009 (July 7 for the US). A week later, the band will also release their second single "Roll Up Your Sleeves" (album cover below) on June 22. The single will contain the b side "Back To The Bare Bones," which will not be featured in their first long player. To listen to the entire album, you can stream each track over at FatCat. The Cave Singers - New Album Title: Welcome Joy

The Cave Singers - LP#2 to be named Welcome Joy

After The Cave Singers completed their set at the HUB Lawnapalooza this afternoon, I asked the Almighty Derek Fudesco about the name of their upcoming album, which is set to release on August 18. Now I hope I'm not just starting another Pardon My Blues/Kissing the Beehive/At Mount Zoomer rumor pit, but according to Fudesco, the album will be entitled Hello Joy Welcome Joy. August can't come soon enough.

Review: Hub Lawnapalooza (5-14-09) - The Cave Singers / Telekinesis / Hey Marseilles

HUB Lawnapalooza 2009

The University of Washington was treated with three great musical performances today on the lawn in front of the Husky Union Building. The event, fittingly named the HUB Lawnapalooza, drew quite an audience to support the three local acts Hey Marseilles, Telekinesis, and The Cave Singers. Sadly, due to a combination of issues in the lab and the crappy weather, I missed nearly all of Hey Marseilles. From what I heard, though, I thought they sounded quite nice.

The second set of the day was performed by Telekinesis. By the time the band had set up their instruments, the rain had actually stopped. While it was still a very grey Seattle afternoon, it was appreciatively dry. Originally just a one man band (Michael Benjamin Lerner), Telekinesis took the stage as a quartet in order to support a live act. As observed in the picture above, lead singer Lerner also plays the drums during shows. I have a lot of respect for singer/guitarists, but singer/drummer enters a whole other realm of greatness. Telekinesis started their set with "Foreign Room", one of the many upbeat, power-pop anthems off their eponymous debut LP. A full set list is below:

Strangely enough, with the opening verse of the band's last song, Telekinesis magically called upon the graces of Mother Nature - as the lyrics "All of a sudden it's summertime" were uttered, the clouds broke and the sun beamed down upon all. Luckily local UW radio station RainyDawg Radio had distributed 80's style sunglasses prior to the show, helping to shield our surprised eyes.

The last set was owned by The Cave Singers, who promised us all a great show before taking the stage. Playing heavily off their new album due out this August (which I was informed after the show will be entitled Welcome Joy), the band played nearly an identical set list as their previous Crocodile show. I will say that every time I hear their new songs live, they seem to sound better than the time before: I think Welcom Joy is going to be one sweet record. Oldies-but-goodies from Invitation Songs included "Helen," "New Monuments," "Seeds of the Night," and of course, "Dancing On Our Graves." Sadly, about a minute into the set closing "Graves," a power outage cut the song abruptly short. When the band failed to fix the problem, the concert ended without the finale of the song. Oh well, the rest of the show was amazing. Big props to Kirk Heynen and the SAUF for putting such an ambitious line-up together. The show was fantastic, and those in attendance were all smiles.

Finally, just a friendly reminder: later this month the ASUW Arts & Entertainment will be putting together another kickass show on the HUB lawn. Friday May 29, Ra Ra Riot and Built to Spill will be rocking out for UW from 3:00 - 7:00 pm. Again, this will be a free show. Unfortunately I can't make this one, but it's bound to be another winner.

UW HUB Lawnapalooza 2009

The Cave Singers, Hey Marseilles, Telekinesis

Attention all you Huskies, this year's sixth annual HUB Lawnapalooza is a must see show! Beginning at 11:oo am this Thursday (May 14) on the lawn in front of the Husky Union Building, local musical acts Telekinesis, veteran Lawnapaloozers Hey Marseilles, and headliners The Cave Singers will be taking the stage. For those of you unfamiliar with Lawnapalooza, it's a once-a-year event which promotes the Student Activities Office. Originally having more of a carnival atmosphere (complete with inflatables and rides), the event planners have funneled more money towards bettering the musical acts. The show is free - well, technically we paid for it through our student activity fees - so there's no excuse to miss it. Being a grad student myself, I'll definitely head over for an extended lunch break. Bring your rain jackets, though, since it's supposed to rain all day...

Review: Sunset Rubdown - Introducing Moonface

Obliterate the memory of coming to at dawn...

To my surprise, the 7" picture disc of Sunset Rubdown's Introducing Moonface arrived by mail yesterday. Packaged nicely in a clear plastic sleeve, it is very easy to admire the decorative vinyl into which the two songs "Coming to at Dawn" and "Insane Love Is Awakening" were pressed. The A side features a candid picture of the band (seen here), and the B side has a picture of the sky (taken by artist/friend of the band David Horvitz).

Upon first listen, I'm immediately taken back to Sunset Rubdown circa 2005 when it was still just a one-man band. On the first song, "Coming to at Dawn," only Spencer Krug can be heard on vocals and piano. It's an intimate tune featuring the heavyhearted woes of a languishing Krug. Listening to it on vinyl with all of the fuzz and crackling only adds to the hurting of Krug's heartsick howls. Luckily, after the flip, we hear a more upbeat "Insane Love Is Awakening." This song is almost spoken-word poetry over a very minamilist guitar riff wailing away in the background. Together, they compliment each other enough to create a very solid two-song single.

Both of these songs are much less produced than any song released by SR on their last few albums, which is probably why they will not appear on the band's upcoming release Dragonslayer (drops June 23). Interestingly, according to the liner notes, "Sunset Rubdown is, on these recordings, Moonface and no others."

White Denim to play Old Blue Last (5-18-2009)

Black Joe Lewis @ The Tractor Tavern (5-22-2009)

Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears at the Tractor

This is just a friendly reminder that Black Joe Lewis & gang will be playing the Tractor Tavern on May 22, 2009. For those of you who saw Spoon rock the Showbox in 2007, Black Joe Lewis was the wickedly groovin' opener, complete with lots of brass and big band power, who also provided the horns for Spoon's performances of "Underdog," "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb," and "Jonathon Fisk." While I'll admit that their sound that night was a little off - they could have been a casualty of the sound dude - their new EP (produced by Spoon drummer Jim Eno) is a testiment that these guys have loads of potential. Released back in March, the band's debut EP Tell 'Em What Your Name Is! has plenty of reasons why you should head over to the Tractor later this month and check out their live show in a more intimate setting.

Unfortunately for Black Joe Lewis, they happen to be playing the same night as the Melvins and Green River at the Showbox. Pick your pleasure wisely, I guess.

Fleet Foxes released the single "Mykonos" b/w "False Knight on the Road" on Sub Pop Records today. For those of you who own the Sun Giant EP, "Mykonos" was probably the song that made you a FF fan in the first place. This majestic fairy-tale number is accompanied by the traditional folk song "False Knight" (which can be heard here), making this single a must-have for any fan. Sunset Rubdown - "Paper Lace" Preview

A strange, yet artfully funny teaser from Dragonslayer

Sunset Rubdown released this little snippet of "Paper Lace" (with the opening bit of Family Ties), a song from their upcoming album Dragonslayer. For those of you who've heard Swan Lake's version of this song from Enemy Mine, you'll probably notice how distinct the two renditions sound. I guess we'll have to wait until June 23 to hear "Paper Lace" in its entirety.

In other Sunset Rubdown news, for those of you who purchased the David Horvitz picture disc of Sunset Rubdown Introducing Moonface, these will apparently ship on this Friday (May 8). If you didn't purchase a copy of the limited release, the band announced that they'll be selling copies at shows while supplies last. For a listing of their upcoming shows, continue reading. WWPJ - "Quiet Little Voices" Single Out Tomorrow

As stated before, Scottish quartet We Were Promised Jetpacks will release their debut single "Quiet Little Voices" tomorrow on FatCat Records. According to the band's press release through their fans' mailing list, "it's the first time that people can buy our music and our mums and dads are very excited." The single is set to be released on 7" and download, and the best place to buy it is probably the FatCat website. It will also be available in some shops in the UK (well, shops that sell 7" singles).

Plants and Animals - Back in the Studio

According to this VancouverIAM interview, Montreal indie rockers Plants and Animals have finished up their 3 weeks of studio time at the Treatment Room and are happy with the results. As stated at the band's official site, the "shit's sounding goooood." Following up their last album Parc Avenue with the same game-winning formula, Plants and Animals will again be self-producing LP #2. I'm sure it'll be as wonderful as its predecessor, especially after hearing some of the new tunes live last March when they played the Nectar Lounge. Still no word on when we should expect to hear any of these songs, but probably some time this year!

With the number of tour dates currently on the lighter side, the band apparently will be taking it easy this summer. The band's only State-side date will be Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival in July.
